Click above to start Top 10 Best Mid-Engine Hatchbacks
There are few concoctions in the automotive industry as bonkers as the mid-engine hatchback. The concept takes the most exotic layout and wraps it in the bodywork of the most mundane and commonplace, creating a paradoxical sub-segment that makes you wonder what their designers were smoking. (Turns out it was rubber, incidentally.) And while incarnations of the mid-engined hatch are a bit of a rarity, the years have produced a considerable number of these most insane of auto types. We’re celebrating the holidays with our ten favorites, and invite you to come along in our gallery by clicking on the image below.

And… after a lengthy hiatus, we’re back. New Year’s Eve marks the return of Knight Rider. It’s the 9th episode, there are nine episodes left, and in a few hours we all ring in 2009. Huzzah.
Knight Rider’s New Year’s resolution is to not suck as much, so starting with next week’s episode, they’re going to try and make the show better. As if. My New Year’s resolution is to watch less Knight Rider, which NBC should make easy for me when it throws dirt on KITT after the February 25th episode.
Tonight’s episode (synopsis via Knight Rider Online):
KNIGHT FEVER: KITT may have met his match when he falls victim to a computer virus — Mike must stop the spread of a computer virus that threatens a total global meltdown. The job gets much harder when KITT is infected. Meanwhile, Mike’s jealousy begins to show when Sarah reconnects with an old flame, who may be the key to solving the latest mission.
That ticking sound you hear is the slow, steady countdown to cancellation. Go grab a beverage and meet me after the jump at 8PM Eastern.

Click above for a hi-res gallery of the 9ff Vantage GTR
9ff has established itself as a serious player in the pursuit of toppiling OEM’s top-speed records, but the German tuner’s range of modifications for Porsches spans the spectrum from mild to wild. Wild, in this case, includes the 9ff Vantage GTR. It’s based on the Cayenne SUV and has nothing to do with the 911-rivalling Aston Martin, but the 9ff sport-ute packs a mighty punch. With a whopping 725hp on tap, the Vantage GTR leaves other modified Cayennes in its dust – make that a big cloud of dust – and straight into Gemballa territory, which is an insane place to spend any amount of time.
To match the power output, 9ff has decked out this Cayenne in Tumbler-worthy bodywork and sinister matte black finish, and is apparently even offering a revised front end to replace the stock model’s angular headlights with round 911 units. See for yourself in the gallery below.

Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500
When Ford introduced the new 2010 Mustang at the LA Auto Show in November, marketing boss Jim Farley promised the next chapter in the Mustang story would be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Well that time has arrived and to anyone who has been following the Mustang pattern over the last several years, it should come as no surprise that it’s the Shelby GT500. Just like the last iteration, the new GT500 is the most powerful factory production Mustang ever.
Like the more prosaic Mustangs, the GT500 is mechanically an evolution of the older model. Just as Ford used the current-gen Bullitt model as the starting point for the 2010 Mustang GT, the lessons learned from developing the limited edition GT500 KR fed directly into the latest Shelby-badged variant. Output of the supercharged 5.4L V8 has now been cranked up to 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and the handling is claimed to be better than before. Check out everything that’s new on the GT500 after the jump.

Autoblog has had a spectacular 2008 and we hope the past 365 days has been as equally rewarding for you. The auto industry itself, however, has suffered through a miserable ’08 and will probably be toasting its conclusion when the ball drops at midnight. While the year began mild enough, summer brought $4/gallon gasoline that highlighted the relatively weak small car and hybrid lineup that our own domestic automakers are working feverishly to fix. And then the long-festering mortgage crisis turned into an all-out credit crisis and a tanking financial industry threatened to take out General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. All three have survived thanks to some 11th hour aid from the federal government, but we’re sure each is hoping that 2009 doesn’t hurt as much as 2008.
We’ll be kicking off 2009 the right way then with a surprise at 12:01 AM EST. Come back to Autoblog.com at Midnight and we think you’ll find something that’s uplifting and serves as a good reminder that we still have a lot to look forward to in this industry.
Happy New Year!
