Researchers from Virginia Tech and the Brookhaven National Laboratory have solved the structure of an enzyme that is critical in the regulation of the neurotransmitter system in the human brain.The enzyme is human kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT II), which regulates the activity of the neurotransmitter system that is activated by glutamate, the most common neurotransmitter in the brain.

"The Allen Reference Atlas: A Digital Color Brain Atlas of the C57BL/6J Male Mouse" offers the first brain atlas to augment traditional brain mapping methods with gene expression data to help delineate brain structures.

Genetic mutations in the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene appear to have significant association with inflammatory injury to the placenta and developing baby, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh's department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences report at the 28th annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Avian influenza (bird flu) has spread to infect birds in half of Bangladesh's 64 districts, say Bangladeshi officials. The two latest outbreaks took place in Gopalganj and Sylhet, according to the Ministry of Health. Some dead crows which were later found to be infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus strain had been found in the port of Chittagong.
